Hunting

The wooded areas surrounding Caribou Lake offer excellent moose and bear hunting. Thick forests and plentiful food supplies ensure that moose and bear populations thrive which provides hunters with a once in a lifetime hunt. Throughout the summer months we take special note of moose and bear movements and behaviors to help our guests have the most successful hunts in the fall. The vast expanse of terrain that surrounds Caribou Lake offers many different hunting options and opportunities.

Moose

moose Moose are shy creatures and avoid humans whenever possible. They can often be seen though, on Caribou Lake near the water's edge during the summer drinking or even swimming between the main land and larger islands. Cow moose are often spotted with a young moose calf, while bull moose are more reclusive. Moose have a poor sense of sight, but and excellent sense of hearing and smell. They will often charge any animal, including humans, if they feel threatened or cornered. Caribou Lake and it's surrounding areas provide excellent moose habitat, which offers hunters a variety of ways and terrain to hunt. Some hunters choose to leave camp by ATV and drive to their hunting locations, while others rent a boat and head up the lake to backcountry hunting spots. As we've said we try to watch moose activity so we can advise our guests on how and where to hunt for moose and have the best possible chance of success. Moose license tags need to be purchased through Caribou Lake Lodge.

Bear

bear Black bears are a more curious animal. Their sense of smell is excellent! Quite often we see bears in camp that smell our breakfast and "drop by" to see what's cooking. Caribou Lake and it's surrounding areas are home to many black bear. Black bears range in size from 100 - 400 pounds with the average being between 200 - 250 pounds. Black bear populations are so high around Caribou Lake that boating up the lake to hunt is usually not necessary as there are many very good hunting spots that can be driven to with and ATV. We monitor our hunting spots and the surrounding areas during the summer to see where the bears are to give our guests the best chance for success during bear hunting season. All black bear license tags need to be purchased through Caribou Lake Lodge.
